Girl's Trip: Awesome Austin Edition.

LOL Hey Brainiacs. Sorry we haven’t been posting as often. Our phone died but WYD?

We hope you’ve been good in our absence but we have been thinking of you! So we documented our trip to Austin, Texas to share with you!

Everything certainly was not rum and roses but we made the best of our time there. We loved Austin. We loved it enough to move there immediately…. if we had the funds.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the highlights of our trip!

Day 1: Breakfast at Black Walnut Cafe | Conquering Mt. Bonnell | Devouring Terry Black’s BBQ

Our first full day in Austin began with breakfast at Black Walnut Cafe. The food was superb but we were conflicted about tipping. This is not your typical brunch spot. Unlike most places where your food is served before payment is received, you order and pay BEFORE you are even seated. You have to get your own drinks and silverware so you can understand why we were conflicted on tipping. The waiters literally only provided the food.

We began our touristy activities with a short hike up Mount Bonnell. The view was amazing. It over looks all of Austin along with the Colorado River. The hike lead to our more adventurous sides with Akayla’s mom even climbing a tree. Akayla still does not know why this happened but it was hilarious.

Since the trip fell on February 1st, we decided to celebrate the first day of Black History Month by going to the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. The museum was unfortunately undergoing renovations so it was really short but they had live music and performers.

After all that walking, we definitely worked up an appetite and because everything is better in Texas, we HAD to get some barbecue. One of the most recommended places was Terry Black’s BBQ. On arrival, not only was the line long AF but they sold out of almost everything. We were able to get some food and it was some of the BEST BBQ we have ever had. We recommend their cornbread and the brisket sandwich.

We continued the first day with the Austin Downtown Ghost Tour. Not only did we learn about the first serial killer, we discovered he may have been the infamous British serial killer, Jack the Ripper. *Friendly reminder: Stay away from the Driskill Hotel. It gave Akayla creepy vibes so you know it’s bad news.

To end the day we wanted to take on the town and experience the famous 6th Street and Rainey Street. There are clubs in every direction but it resembles your average downtown club scene. We ended up in a jazz restaurant before giving into jet-lag.

Day 2: Breakfast at Crepe Cafe | Experiencing the Museum of Weird | Strolling The Historic African American Art Walk | Dinner at Iron Cactus

Our love for french culture prompted us to eat breakfast at The Crepe Cafe. It was owned by an authentic french man and gave the feel of a perfect hole in the wall restaurant. The food was prepared fresh in front of our eyes and was great.

The Museum of Weird was our next stop following breakfast. The museum was interesting to say the least. They had everything from freaks of nature and Fiji mermaids to shrunken heads and mummies. There was even a sideshow act with a man who was immune to electricity due to a heart murmur. The currents run through his body and can even power light bulbs and other appliances. Akayla’s mom was his volunteer and she almost cried when he tried to touch her.

We continued our Black History Month celebration by going through an art walk of the African American Historical district. We even found some Jamaicans along the way before we ended the day with dinner at Iron Cactus.

Overall, the general motto is to Keep Austin Weird. Austin is definitely a recommended place to visit and to move. Its a city filled with immigrants from all over the country and the world. The people are beyond friendly (sometimes too friendly) but overall it was good vibes all around.
